Our junior pathway starts around age 8 through to teens and masters.
All swimmers have timetabled sessions each week, working with the same set of coaches and teachers helping them improve and develop. The number and length of sessions available is based on age and ability of the individual.
We want our swimmers to enjoy what they do: many of our older swimmers joined at 7 or 8, and are still with us well into their teens and beyond.
Around 40% of eligible swimmers qualifying for County, Regional and National competition – that’s more than many clubs twice our size. We may not be the biggest Club, but we certainly punch above our weight!
Competitive swimming in the Arena and Sussex Leagues, open meets and our own Club competitions, is an important part of what we do. But we also recognise that competing at a high level may not be for everyone – which is why we have pathways that allow swimmers to explore Waterpolo, Artistic Swimming and Openwater.
The Cadets are our youngest swimmers who’ve learnt to swim a short distance, and want to continue to improve.
Aged from 5 and up, the Cadets make use of the smaller pools at the Prince Regent.
When our Cadets start, many of them can barely swim a width of the learner pool. When they graduate, they’re swimming lengths of the main pool. Of course, we hope some of them might want to move into the Club ‘proper’ – but that’s not why we do it: our priority is to try and make sure they love being in the water!
Cadets are supported in the water and on poolside by our team of qualified teachers – a mixture of professionals of many years’ standing, and some of our older competitive swimmers; in combination, this combination provides the reassurance and inspiration to enthuse younger children. Everyone involved is properly qualified – with teaching qualifications, safeguarding and full DBS checks.
We’re proud of our Cadets programme – as well as supporting the next generation of children to love the water, it allows our older swimmers to gain training, teaching and safety qualifications and give something back to their sport.
